The Adaptation Engine – use of worldbuilding for adaptation of existing narratives

Project partners

The project explores the use of worldbuilding in game engines and other game technology to adapt existing narratives (e.g. literature) to transmedia IPs (e.g. games, films, TV series, VR). The aim is to develop a digital adaptation method in practice and to test the method in the face of reality in a Danish games company, an animation film company, a book publisher and a theatre.

Facts

Start: March 2023

Expected completion: August 2024

CHALLENGE
As the media image explodes, fiction stories are moving out onto more and more new media such as streaming, social media and digital interactive platforms. For Danish createch companies and the narrative industry (e.g. theatre, film, games, TV, book publishing), the core business is challenged, and the companies lack methods and tools to adapt their fiction IPs (fiction rights) to other and new digital platforms.

SOLUTION
As a solution, many point to storyworlds (transmedia universes). But while important theoretical research has been done on storyworlds, it is more difficult to find methods that can be used in practice to develop universes and transmedia adaptations.

The Adaptation Engine project explores the use of worldbuilding in game engines and other game technology to adapt existing narratives (e.g. literature) to transmedia IPs such as games, films, TV series and VR.

RESULT
For the companies, the project will develop methods and help to develop existing business areas and to streamline development and production processes in the narrative industry.

For The National Filmschool of Denmark and other educational institutions, the method will be directly implementable in teaching and continuing education and will be an important contribution to new knowledge within the storyworld field for the benefit of KUV and research in general.

The project results in a whitepaper containing results and an audio-visual presentation that indicates the step-by-step method as well as an overview of game tools for developing transmedia adaptations.
