Establishing sustainability standards for the video game industry

Project partners

10 gaming companies

In an innovation collaboration between Aalborg University and 10 gaming companies, the basis for future sustainability standards in the gaming industry is to be prepared based on the measurement and reporting of non-financial data in a systems perspective. The work is based on partial results from the report “Analysis of the climate footprint in the gaming industry” (2022).

Facts

Start: March 2023

Expected completion: December 2023

CHALLENGE
Sustainability is one of the central focus areas on the video game industry’s agenda, especially with regard to the industry’s CO2 footprint both in the development and execution of video games. There are currently no Danish sustainability standards for the industry or methods for measuring the climate footprint.

SOLUTION
Based on the analysis report “Analysis of the climate footprint in the gaming industry” carried out in 2022, the innovation project addresses the questions and conditions highlighted in the report as areas that require further research and development work within climate footprint measurement.

The project aims to provide the basis for future sustainability standards in the video game industry and focuses on the following matters:

  • Improving the data base for measurements of scope 3 downstream activities
  • Improving the data base for climate footprint measurement
  • Climate footprint measurements with regard to the fact that the industry’s climate footprint is often driven by actors, that the video game company, only indirectly or, has no influence on at all
  • Ways in which climate footprint and climate footprint measurement can be used as a competitive parameter at industry, individual company and product level.
  • Business models for improving climate footprint measurement based on value chain and system measurements.
  • Automated, data-driven climate footprint measurements as an alternative to climate footprint self-reporting systems

RESULT
For the gaming industry, the project is expected to result in a strengthened basis for common standards for climate footprint measurements that can be used at product and company level.
